Two people were dead and 16 others were missing after flash floods and mudslides tore through a village in Xi'an, the capital city of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, later Friday.
Flash flooding from seasonal rains hit the Weiziping village in Chang'an District of southern Xi'an at around 18:00 Friday, wiping out two houses and infrastructure such as roads, bridges and power supply facilities.
Amateur footage provided by villagers and tourists to China Central Television (CCTV) show floodwaters rushing down mountain slopes and onto rivers.
Following an overnight emergency rescue operation, four trapped people have been rescued and evacuated to safety.
A section of National Highway 210 between linking the flood-hit village with the Fengyukou Valley, which had been damaged by the flood, has been cleared and reopened after emergency repair.
Rescue workers are continuing to search and rescue the missing people, investigate and eliminate risks and reinforce river embankment.
Members of the local police force, armed forces troops, and communications and power supply emergency services personnel have been dispatched to the site to assist with the rescue efforts.
