Storyline

Authorities in northwest China's Xi'an are stepping up post-disaster relief efforts after flash floods and mudslides caused by seasonal rains lashed the area on Friday evening.

The sudden mountain torrents and debris flow wiped out two houses and severely damaged infrastructure such as roads, bridges and power supply facilities in Weiziping Village, leaving two people dead and 16 others missing.

Flash floods and mudslides flowing from the mountain formed a trumpet-shaped river trench extending about 500 meters in length and spanning about 60 meters at its widest point. This destroyed a section of National Highway 210 linking the flood-hit village with the Fengyukou Valley, with two vehicles washed into the river.

At present, the damaged section of the highway has been reopened after emergency repairs, and the cleanup and removal of mudslides now are ongoing.

The remaining villagers in Jiwozi Group of the flood-hit Weiziping Village have been evacuated to safety, and rescue workers are busy searching for missing people.

In addition, the Xi'an Electric Power Supply Company under the State Grid has mobilized more than 20 vehicles and over 170 people to carry out on-site repair work.

Aside from the 45 households in Jiwozi Group, residents in other disaster-stricken areas now have access to power supply as of 16:20 on Saturday.

More than 100 armed police officers were also dispatched by the Xi'an Detachment of Shaanxi Armed Police Corps and rushed to the site after receiving notice on Friday evening.

Due to traffic disruptions, vehicles and large rescue equipment were unable to get to the disaster-hit area. A special team was sent to carry out search and rescue work despite encountering secondary disasters, while also having to brave poor visibility at night and muddy roads.

Currently, rescuers have transferred and evacuated 81 people and 11 trapped vehicles.

On Saturday morning, a detachment of the First mobile Corps of the Armed Police mobilized 160 soldiers to repair roads in the surrounding area of Jiwozi Village in the Luanzhen Subdistrict. They carried 26 sets of large-scale rescue engineering machinery and equipment to complete the challenging mission.
