Storyline

Many cities in Germany plan to hold peace rallies and demonstrations on the occasion of the upcoming International Day of Peace, calling on Western countries to stop sending weapons to Ukraine and peacefully resolve the conflict.

In order to mark the International Day of Peace on Sept. 21, a series of rallies and demonstrations are scheduled to be held in 14 cities across Germany. These rallies have a common theme -- seeking a peaceful solution to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, which broke out on February 24, 2022.

Karlsruhe is the first stop of this series of rallies, which attracted many nearby residents to participate on Monday. Some participants said that only through negotiations can the Russia-Ukraine crisis be resolved.

"We will hold rallies across Germany and call on the German government to urge both sides in the Russia-Ukraine conflict to cease fire," said Stefan Lau, organizer of the rally.

NATO recently announced that it would hold the "largest-scale" military exercises in NATO's history next year in Germany, Poland and the Baltic Sea region. The exercise will see Russia as the simulated enemy. Many people worry that this move will further intensify regional tensions.

"NATO is a military alliance, same as all other military alliances. Military alliances should be abolished. All military logic should be abandoned," Lau said.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has lasted for more than a year. The spillover of the crisis has caused prices to rise in Europe and put people's lives under great pressure. More and more German people have begun to oppose the shipment of weapons to Ukraine and called for a peaceful resolution of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
