A Syrian lawmaker on Friday blamed the terrorists backed by the U.S. and Türkiye for the drone attack in Syria's central city of Homs that claimed the lives of at least 89 people and left 277 others injured.
The incident, one of the deadliest single attack in years in the country, happened Thursday after a graduation ceremony for Syrian military officers at the Military Academy in Homs.
So far, no group has come forward to claim responsibility for the attack.
When attending the funeral, Nasser al-Nasser, a member of the Syrian Parliament, said that the news is devastating, and that the victims are all innocent civilians. He also expressed his disappointment as no condemnation has been so far on the "terrorist acts".
"These are students from the Military Academy who came to celebrate with their families, and the attackers know that they are all innocent civilians. This is terrorism led by Türkiye and the United States in the Syrian arena. We, as members of the People's Assembly, feel pain upon hearing the news, and the majority of us are here. These are terrorist acts that the United Nations Security Council and countries of the world neither condemn nor do they condemn other acts in other regions. They say that there is no terrorism in Syria, but this terrorism is manufactured by Turkey and the United States," said the Parliament member.
Hassan, a cadet of the Syrian Military Academy, recalled moments of the drone attack which had took his friend's life.
"My friend from the Jableh area was martyred, and my other friends were injured. Yesterday, we were in the residence eating together. In the morning, we went to the officers' graduation ceremony at the Military Academy. After the ceremony ended and the general had left, the shell fell on the graduates who had gathered with their families in the courtyard, and joy turned to consolation," said Hassan.
The Syrian government declared a three-day official mourning period beginning on Friday, during which flags in Syria and at all Syrian embassies and other diplomatic missions overseas will be lowered to half-mast.
Oman, India and Iran expressed their condolences to the Syrian government, according to the state news agency SANA.
This incident is part of a rising trend of drone attacks in Syria in recent months, with rebel factions employing drones to target government installations and infrastructure.
Conversely, the Syrian government and its allies have also harnessed drone technology for offensive operations against rebel strongholds.
The Syrian civil war, which erupted in 2011, has inflicted substantial casualties and left the nation fractured, as government forces remain embroiled in conflict with a variety of rebel groups.
