Storyline

South China's Guangdong Province is taking swift action to prepare for the approaching Typhoon Koinu.

Koinu, the 14th typhoon of this year, was located around 190 km south of Shanwei City in Guangdong Province at 13:00 Saturday, packing winds of up to 173 km per hour near its center, according to the National Meteorological Center.

China's national observatory on Saturday continued to issue a yellow alert, the third highest in a four-colored warning system, for potential strong winds and heavy rain brought by Typhoon Koinu.

Local maritime authorities in Shenzhen City of Guangdong have dispatched more personnel to patrol around water areas to urge the boats to take shelter at the harbor.

"We’re enhancing patrols along the coastline and at sea. We are paying extra attention on passenger boats including leisure vessels and yachts, and we are urging them to return to port to take shelter," said Wang Chenji, director of the Dayawan Maritime Management Center.

Shenzhen’s urban management department have conducted inspections at disaster-prone areas to ensure residents’ safety, while the emergency management bureau is closely monitoring the movement of the typhoon.

Elsewhere, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on Friday activated a level-IV emergency response against Typhoon Koinu by conducting comprehensive inspection into potential hazards.
