Global sugar prices hit their highest level in almost 13 years in September, as major producers including Thailand and India suffered from El Nino weather patterns that hit sugar output, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said Friday.
Global food prices remained steady in September, as the FAO Food Index, which measures international food prices, rose to 121.5 points last month from 121.4 points in August.
However, the FAO's Sugar Price Index jumped 9.8 percent last month compared to August, after rising for two consecutive months. It has reached its highest point since November 2010, the UN agency said.
An increase in transport costs due to rising energy prices and dry weather caused by El Nino, a warm weather event that starts in the Pacific Ocean, were contributing factors, the FAO said.
The FAO index tracts monthly price changes in the international trade of cereals, vegetable oils, dairy products, meat and sugar.
