"It's no longer Mombasa to Nairobi. We now have it all the way to Naivasha. And among the conversations we will be having with other countries is how other countries beyond Kenya, Uganda, DRC Congo, Brazzaville are also thinking about the same [that] how do we connect the East from the West, so other countries are also looking at what can they learn from Kenya and how can they be part of this great success."

Kenya's President William Ruto has commended the Chinese-built Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) for its significant role in transforming local travel and strengthening Kenya's ties with neighboring countries.
During an interview with China Central Television (CCTV) which was aired on Friday, Ruto highlighted the SGR's popularity among Kenyans, evident in consistently high occupancy rates and the growing challenge of securing a seat due to increased demand.
"It's quite a nice experience, and many of the people have taken it. In fact, the challenge we now have is that for you to get on the SGR, you need maybe a-week booking in advance," he said.
The rail line, connecting the port city of Mombasa and the capital Nairobi of Kenya, stands as the country's largest infrastructure project since it gained independence in the 1960s.
Launched in 2017, the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR spans a distance of 480 kilometers across 33 stations. As an early fruit of China's proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR is also a flagship project of Kenya's Vision 2030 long-term development blueprint.
Construction of phase one of the 472-km SGR project from Mombasa to Nairobi, which began on Dec. 12, 2014, was completed two and a half years later ahead of schedule. The construction of phase 2A of the project which runs from Nairobi to the Rift Valley town of Naivasha covering 120 km commenced in October 2016 and was completed on Oct. 16, 2019.
Having operated without major hitches for 2,314 days as of Sept 30, 2023, the modern railway line stretching from Mombasa to Naivasha had transported 2,405 million standard containers and 28.609 million metric tons of goods since its reception.
The number of passengers transported through the Mombasa-Nairobi-Naivasha SGR in the same period stood at 11.155 million, with an average seat occupancy rate of 95.8 percent.
President Ruto also mentioned that the railway is sparking discussions among its neighboring countries on learning from Kenya's success and exploring ways to collaborate in linking the East to the West.
"It's no longer Mombasa to Nairobi. We now have it all the way to Naivasha. And among the conversations we will be having with other countries is how other countries beyond Kenya, Uganda, DRC Congo, Brazzaville are also thinking about the same [that] how do we connect the East from the West, so other countries are also looking at what can they learn from Kenya and how can they be part of this great success," said Ruto.
