Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday held a phone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron on bilateral ties and joint response to climate change, and exchanged views with him on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Xi said that since Macron's visit to China in April this year, China-France exchanges at all levels have resumed rapidly, and cooperation in various fields has made solid progress and achieved many results.
Noting that the year of 2024 marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries, Xi said China and France should stay committed to the original aspiration in establishing diplomatic relations, carry on with traditional friendship and elevate the bilateral ties to a new level.
Xi said China is willing to maintain high-level exchanges with France, hold the next meeting under the China-France high-level people-to-people exchange mechanism, push for new progress in cooperation in such fields as education, culture and scientific research, and promote friendly exchanges between the people of the two countries.
China appreciates France's active participation in the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation and the sixth China International Import Expo, welcomes more French products to enter the Chinese market, and welcomes more French companies to invest in China, Xi said, adding that China hopes France could provide a fair and non-discriminatory business environment for the investment of Chinese enterprises in France.
Xi said China is willing to strengthen cooperation with France in the United Nations and other multilateral institutions.
Noting that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and the European Union, Xi said China and the EU should remain partners for mutually beneficial cooperation in the current world that is full of turbulence and unrest. He expressed the hope that France will play a constructive role in promoting the development of China-EU relations.
Xi said China and France have cooperated well on climate change. The 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to be held in Dubai will for the first time summarize and assess the implementation of the Paris Agreement, and guide the future efforts in global climate governance, he said.
The institutional framework of the Paris Agreement, especially the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities and nationally determined contributions to the global response to climate change, should be upheld, said the Chinese president.
Xi said China is ready to work with France to send a strong signal of joint efforts to address climate change and push for a successful COP28 in Dubai.
Macron said he still remembered clearly his visit to China in April, and expressed his satisfaction with the recent exchanges and dialogues between the two countries at all levels.
Under the current international situation, it is of great significance for France and China to maintain strategic communication and cooperation, he said.
Macron said France is willing to take the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between France and China next year as an opportunity to push closer high-level exchanges with China, and deepen cooperation with China in such fields as trade and economy, aviation and people-to-people exchanges.
France hopes to have close communication with China at the COP28 and continue to cooperate with China to respond to global issues such as climate change and biodiversity protection, he said.
Macron said France is willing to push the EU and China to further develop their comprehensive strategic partnership in the spirit of mutual respect and mutually beneficial cooperation.
The two heads of state exchanged views on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
They agreed that it is imperative to avoid further deterioration of the Palestinian-Israeli situation, especially the emergence of a more serious humanitarian crisis, and the "two-state solution" is the fundamental way out of the recurring Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
The two sides agreed to maintain communication on international and regional issues of common concern and contribute to safeguarding world peace and stability.
