Storyline

China and Singapore signed a mutual visa exemption agreement in Beijing on Thursday, which will come into effect from Feb. 9.

Chinese and Singaporean citizens holding ordinary passports will be allowed to enter and stay in each other's countries visa-free for up to 30 days, according to the agreement.

The agreement covers visits for tourists, and people visiting relatives or conducting personal business. For activities such as work and news reporting, which require prior approval, and for stays exceeding 30 days, it is still necessary to obtain the appropriate visa before entering either country.

"We have very good bilateral relations. I think it is a decision of both Singapore and China to want to see more exchanges at the peoples-to-peoples level," said Peter Tan, Singapore's Ambassador to China.

Wu Xi, Director-General of the Department of Consular Affairs of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said that the ministry will continue to vigorously pursue visa exemption or simplified visa procedures agreements with other countries.

"With the deepening of reform and opening up and advancement of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China's connections with the world are becoming increasingly close, and more and more Chinese citizens are venturing abroad. The level of convenience for Chinese citizens going abroad has significantly improved, and the 'value' of Chinese passports is rising steadily," Wu said.

She said China has concluded mutual visa-exemption agreements with 157 countries to date, covering different types of passports. The country has also reached agreements or arrangements for simplified visa procedures with 44 countries. Full mutual visa exemptions have been agreed with 22 countries, including Singapore, Maldives, and Kazakhstan. Additionally, more than 60 countries and regions have offered visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry for Chinese citizens.
