Storyline

President of the Republic of the Congo Denis Sassou Nguesso has debunked the "neo-colonialism" fallacy against China, saying that it is those who have colonized Africa and advance "neo-colonialism" in the continent that hype up the rhetoric.

In an interview with China Central Television (CCTV) aired on Friday, Sassou made the statement in response to the Western perception of China's role in Africa as so-called "neo-colonialism."

Sassou said he is against interpreting China's engagement on the continent through a colonial lens, highlighting that China has never colonized others.

"Speaking of 'neo-colonialism', there must be 'old colonialism'. The language that I'm speaking right now does not belong to our nation. China has never colonized Africa, how can we say 'neo-colonialism?' China has no colonies in Africa," said the president.

He stressed that such a fallacy is cooked up by the former colonial powers in Africa to maliciously throw mud at the cooperation between China and Africa.

"What is surprising is that those who said this are the very people who colonized Africa, promoted neo-colonialism and supported apartheid in Africa. What a surprise that such words come from those people! I don't even know what to say," Sassou said.

"They were the ones who promoted colonialism, who implemented slavery in Africa, who practiced neo-colonialism, and who plundered Africa's natural resources! We need to find a time to debate this with them face to face. I will say no more," he added.
