Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with representatives from business, strategic and academic communities of the United States in Beijing on Wednesday.

Noting that the China-U.S. relationship is one of the most important bilateral relationships in the world, Xi said whether the two countries cooperate or confront bears on the well-being of their two peoples and the future and destiny of mankind.

The respective successes of China and the U.S. are opportunities for each other. As long as both sides regard each other as partners, respect each other, live in peace, and cooperate for win-win results, China-U.S. relations will become better, Xi added.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the U.S. The history of China-U.S. relations is a history of friendly exchanges between the two peoples. The past was written by the people, and the future will be created by the people, Xi said.

The Chinese president expressed his hope that people from all walks of life of the two countries will have more exchanges, build consensus, enhance trust, remove all kinds of interference, and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, so as to bring more tangible benefits to the two peoples and inject more stability into the world.

Xi also listened to American representatives, and responded to their concerns.

Xi pointed out that China's economy is healthy and sustainable.

Last year, China's economic growth was among the fastest in the world's major economies, and its contribution to global growth continued to exceed 30 percent. This was achieved by the Chinese people and could not have been achieved without international cooperation, Xi said, adding that China's development has gone through all sorts of difficulties and challenges to get to where it is today. It did not collapsed in the past because of the "China collapse" theory, and it is not peaking now because of the "Peak China" theory, Xi said.

China will continue to promote high-quality development and Chinese modernization, so that the Chinese people can continue to lead a better life and China can make greater contributions to the world's sustainable development, Xi said. The future of China's development is bright, and the country has the strength and confidence to do so, he added.

Xi reiterated that reform and opening up is an important magic weapon for contemporary China to catch up with the times in great strides.

China's reform and opening-up will not stop, Xi said, and the country is planning and implementing a series of major measures to comprehensively deepen reform, and continue to build a market-oriented, law-based and internationalized top business environment to provide a broader space for the development of companies from all countries, including the United States.

In the face of new circumstances and changes in China-U.S. economic and trade relations in recent years, the two sides should adhere to mutual respect, mutual benefit and equal consultation, act in accordance with economic and market rules, expand and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in economy and trade, respect each other's right to development, and pursue a win-win situation for China and the U.S. and for the world at large, Xi said.

U.S. companies are welcome to participate more in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), attend the China International Import Expo (CIIE) and other major economic and trade events, and continue to invest in, explore and succeed in China, Xi said.

Xi stressed that lessons should be learned from the twists and turns and serious challenges in China-U.S. relations in recent years, adding that the bilateral ties cannot return to the past, but can have a better future.

Xi said that the biggest consensus reached when he met with U.S. President Joe Biden in San Francisco last year was that China-U.S. relations should remain stable and improve, adding that over the past few months, the teams of the two sides have maintained communication on politics and diplomacy, economy, trade and finance, law enforcement and drug control, climate change, people-to-people exchanges and other areas based on the consensus, and made progress.

Under the current circumstances, China and the U.S. have more common interests, not less. Whether it is in traditional areas such as economy, trade and agriculture, or in emerging areas such as climate change and artificial intelligence, China and the U.S. should serve as a boost to each other's development, rather than a hindrance, Xi said, adding that promoting the recovery of the world economy and resolving international and regional hotspot issues all require coordination and cooperation between China and the U.S., as well the two sides' mindset and commitment as major countries.

The U.S. side should work with China to establish a correct strategic understanding, properly handle sensitive issues, maintain the stabilizing momentum, actively explore the right way to get along with each other, and promote the sustained, steady and sound development of China-U.S. relations, Xi said.

Attending American representatives lauded China's economy development in the past decades, and hailed China's efforts in developing new quality productive forces and achieving sustainable high-quality development under Xi's leadership.

They said the Chinese people's right to development should be respected, and expressed their belief that China will achieve its own development goals and promote the development and integration of global economy, saying that a strong and prosperous China is a positive force for the world.

The economic relationship between the United States and China is closely interdependent, and the two countries can only achieve development and prosperity through peaceful coexistence, said the representatives.

U.S. companies appreciate China's recent measures to further reform and opening up, are optimistic about the prospects of China's economic development, and will unswervingly continue to explore opportunities in China and develop long-term and close cooperative relations with China, said the representatives.

The San Francisco meeting between Xi and Biden boosted the expectations and confidence of all sectors of the U.S. and the world in the future of U.S.-China relations. The U.S. business, strategic and academic communities support the two sides to strengthen exchanges at all levels, enhance mutual understanding, trust and cooperation, jointly address global challenges, and promote the establishment of stable, sustainable and productive U.S.-China relations, said the representatives.
