Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena in Beijing on Wednesday.

Pointing out the long history of China-Sri Lanka friendship and a natural sense of affinity shared by the two peoples, Xi said consolidating and developing China-Sri Lanka relations is in line with the fundamental interests and common expectations of the two peoples.

Xi said China is willing to work with Sri Lanka to continuously carry forward the spirit of "independence, self-reliance, solidarity and mutual assistance" reflected in the Rubber-Rice Pact, consolidate political mutual trust, strengthen exchanges of governing experience, expand practical cooperation, jointly advance high quality Belt and Road construction, and continue the deepening of their strategic cooperative partnership.

Xi emphasized that China firmly supports Sri Lanka in safeguarding its national sovereignty, independence and national dignity, and in exploring a modernization path that suits its national conditions. He said China will continue to provide assistance to Sri Lanka's economic and social development to the best of its ability.

The Chinese president called for joint efforts on high quality Belt and Road cooperation, particularly on two flagship projects: the Port City Colombo project and the Hambantota Port in Sri Lanka. He also called on the two sides to deepen logistics, energy and industrial cooperation, and strengthen cooperation and exchanges in digital economy, green economy, clean energy, culture, tourism, marine economy and other fields.

China is willing to continue to expand the import of high-quality Sri Lankan products, and encourage its enterprises to invest and open businesses in Sri Lanka, hoping that Sri Lanka will provide a fair and transparent business environment, according to Xi.

Xi said China is willing to strengthen cooperation with Sri Lanka in rural poverty reduction and help Sri Lanka achieve economic transformation and upgrade, and sustainable development.

Xi underlined that both sides should further carry forward the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, strengthen collaboration in international and regional affairs, safeguard common interests as well as international fairness and justice, and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

Noting that Sri Lanka and China share a traditional friendship, Gunawardena underscored that Sri Lanka unequivocally abides by the one-China principle, unequivocally pursues the policy of friendly cooperation with China, and holds China as a priority in its foreign relations.

Gunawardena pointed out that Sri Lanka will not forget that China always lends a helping hand in a timely manner when it is faced with difficulties, calling the two countries friends with a shared destiny and tested by hard times.

The Sri Lankan Prime Minister said projects such as the Port City Colombo and the Hambantota Port have greatly boosted Sri Lanka's economic and social development, and also effectively promoted the overall development of the region.

Gunawardena said Sri Lanka is willing to continue to work with China to carry forward the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, deepen Sri Lanka-China friendly relations, promote joint Belt and Road construction, expand cooperation in economy, trade, education, tourism, poverty reduction and other fields, strengthen communication and cooperation on international and multilateral affairs, and promote the establishment of a community with a shared future for Asia and a community with a shared future for mankind.
