China's top legislator Zhao Leji on Thursday delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2024 in the coastal town of Boao, southern China's Hainan Province.
Zhao, chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, said that in the world today, changes on a scale unseen in a century are unfolding at an accelerating pace, posing great challenges to world peace and development.
In face of the question of where the future of humanity is heading, China's answer is building a global community of shared future, said Zhao.
He called on Asian countries to serve as defenders of Asian security and make positive contributions to world peace and stability.
Asian countries should act as promoters for Asian development and create tremendous opportunities for global economic recovery, said Zhao.
He noted that Asian countries should be promoters of cooperation, so as to foster broad consensus for world solidarity and collaboration.
Asian countries should work together to promote opening-up in Asia and form a strong synergy for building a world of win-win cooperation, said Zhao.
He also called on the countries to promote Asian civilization with an aim to inject inexhaustible impetus to the exchange and mutual learning among civilizations.
More than 1,500 representatives from political and business circles, and think tanks in over 60 countries and regions attended the event, including Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Nauruan President David Adeang, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica Roosevelt Skerrit, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, president of the Supreme Privy Council to the King of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk, World Intellectual Property Organization Director General Daren Tang, Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Mathias Cormann, Secretary-General of ASEAN Kao Kim Hourn, and Ban Ki-moon, chairman of the Boao Forum for Asia.
Attendees said the forum has injected more confidence and impetus into promoting peace and development in the region and the world, expressing the willingness to strengthen solidarity and make contributions to improving the well-being of people worldwide.
