The China Logistics Prosperity Index (LPI) rose 4.4 percentage points from a month earlier to 51.5 percent in March, returning to the expansionary zone, according to industry data released by the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing on Tuesday.
The index tracks the country's logistics market performance, with a reading above 50 percent indicating expansion, and a reading below that reflecting contraction.
In the breakdown, during the period, the business volume index for road transportation rose by 4.7 percent compared with the previous month, while the index for postal express delivery increased by 3.7 percent month on month.
Data also showed that following the Spring Festival in February, there has been an upturn in the transportation volume of bulk commodities via rail. In March, the business volume index for railway transportation reached 53.5 percent, indicating a growth of 1.8 percent over the previous month. Surveys have also revealed that the average daily loading volume for railway freight in March went up over 5 percent compared with the cumulative average daily loading volume in January to February.
"The transportation operations in sectors such as road transportation, railway transportation, and postal express delivery have all been on the rise. Particularly, the railway sector has seen accelerating increase in transportation volume, reflecting an ongoing optimization of the supply structure within the logistics industry, along with further coordination among various transportation modes," said Liu Yuhang, director of the China Logistics Information Center.
Meanwhile, the employment index of the logistics industry increased by 2.7 percent month on month, showing significant improvement. Some companies have reported that since the work resumption after the holiday season, the difficulty in recruiting workers has eased compared with the same period in previous years, despite a moderate increase in labor costs.
"The continuous vitality of the Chinese economy has created highly favorable conditions for employment. On the one hand, the growth rate of the Chinese economy is constantly accelerating, and on the other hand, the job market is continuously improving. Therefore, from this perspective, the current development of the Chinese economy is not only characterized by quantitative growth but also by qualitative improvement," said Cai Jin, vice president of the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing.
