2. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Wang Wenbin, spokesman, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (starting with shot 1):
"The United States' unilateral demarcation of the continental shelf limits beyond 200 nautical miles is a typical act of unilateralism and hegemony. The rules for delimiting the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles originate from the Unclos, rather than customary international law. The United States is not a party to the Convention and has no right to claim its outer continental shelf in accordance with the Convention, nor is it entitled to review its outer continental shelf limits through the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf."

4. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Wang Wenbin, spokesman, Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
"The unilateral claim of the United States is illegal, null and void. It seriously violates international law, erodes the international seabed area which is the 'common inheritance of mankind,' harms the overall interests of the international community, and will not be recognized by the international community. This once again exposes the pragmatism and hegemonic nature of the United States which exploit or reject international law and rules only based on its own interest."

The unilateral demarcation of continental shelf boundary by the United States is illegal, null and void, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Tuesday, citing the fact that the U.S. is not a party to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Spokesman Wang Wenbin made the comments at a press briefing in Beijing in response to a query about the U.S. announcement of extended continental shelf outer limits. The U.S. is reportedly to extend jurisdiction over a resource-rich seabed area, which met opposition from Chinese and Russian diplomats at a meeting of the International Seabed Authority earlier this year.
When asked to comment on this, Wang reiterated that the U.S. unilateral claim is unacceptable given that it hasn't joined the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (Unclos).
