Seven people died and 711 were injured in a 7.3-magnitude earthquake that hit Hualien County of China's Taiwan region on Wednesday morning, according to the latest Hualien fire department data.
The department said that by 14:00 Wednesday, 77 people, all in Hualien, were trapped due to the disaster.
At present, a rescue team from Taipei is heading for Hualien and another rescue team is gathering in New Taipei City before getting ready to rush to Hualien.
However, the road to Hualien has been cut off.
The mainland is paying close attention to the disaster and is willing to provide disaster relief assistance, a spokesperson said on Wednesday.
The quake struck at 07:58 Wednesday (Beijing Time) and the epicenter was monitored at 23.81 degrees north latitude and 121.74 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 12 km, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.
