Haiti's government on Tuesday named the members of its transitional council, marking an end to the uncertainty about who will lead the country amid the political void left after Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced his resignation last month.
The transitional council consists of seven voting members who are mainly representatives of Haitian political parties, and two non-voting observers drawn from civil organizations and religious figures.
The council will temporarily exercise certain presidential powers during the transitional period before the inauguration of the democratically-elected president, and will be responsible for selecting an interim prime minister, forming a new cabinet, approving decrees, appointing the provisional electoral council, establishing the national security council and deploying the United Nations' Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti.
According to the decree, the democratically-elected president shall take office by February 7, 2026, at the latest.
Haitian politics was thrust into turmoil when then-President Joffre Moise was assassinated on July 7, 2021, leaving a power vacuum. The Caribbean country was supposed to hold general elections before Feb. 7 this year, but they were not held as scheduled.
The security situation in Haiti has also continued to deteriorate as gang violence escalates, with a number of organized crime groups in the capital city of Port-au-Prince launching attacks against public facilities from the end of February, demanding that Prime Minister Ariel Henry step down. Following intense pressure, Henry announced on March 11 that his government would resign after the establishment of the transitional council.
