Over 10,000 women have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the Israel-Hamas conflict broke out on October 7 last year, according to a report published by United Nations (UN) Women on Tuesday.
The UN body, which is dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women, said that among those who have lost their lives, an estimated 6,000 were mothers, with their deaths leaving around 19,000 children orphaned, according to data in its latest 'gender alert' detailing the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
Women who have survived a barrage of Israeli airstrikes and ground operations now face displacement, widowhood, hunger, and other hardships, the report warned.
The organization also expressed grave concerns that over one million Palestinian women and girls in the Gaza Strip are facing "catastrophic hunger," with access to food, safe drinking water, functioning toilets or running water being nearly impossible.
It again stressed that only peace can end this suffering and urged for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2728, adopted on March 25, to enforce an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, release all detained individuals, and ensure safe and unimpeded humanitarian access.
Israel has launched a large-scale offensive in the Gaza Strip in retaliation for the Oct. 7 attack carried out by Hamas in southern Israel, during which around 1,200 people were killed and over 200 were taken hostage.
The more than six-month-long war in Gaza has so far killed 33,843 Palestinians and wounded 76,575 others, according to the latest figures from the Ministry of Health in Gaza on Tuesday.
