Storyline

The Chinese Grand Prix, a Formula One World Championship round, is back in Shanghai on Friday after a four year hiatus, with fans cheering the country's first F1 driver Zhou Guanyu as he hits the track on home turf for the first time.

A Shanghai local, Zhou drives for the Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber. The fan favorite finished the qualifying at 10th place (P10), behind his teammate Valtteri Bottas. Both the Kick drivers have a chance to score points at Saturday's Sprint by finishing in the top eight starting from P9 and P10.

A total of 20 drivers from 10 F1 teams will roar high-rev engines on the Shanghai International Circuit. The three-day racing extravaganza is expected to draw almost 200,000 people to the venue to cheer on the racers.

"Go Zhou Guanyu! It's his home track this time. I'm so happy to be in Shanghai. I hope Zhou Guanyu can get points. Go, Zhou!" said a fan.

"I hope he drives well and gets points," said fan of both Zhou and the Scuderia Ferrari team.

"2024 is the 20th anniversary of the Chinese Grand Prix and it's the first time a Chinese driver is racing. Of course I have to come to support him," said another fan.

"Though I hope he can get points, we have to realize the fact that finishing the circuit is a victory in itself," another supporter said.

The three-day event includes a Sprint and Sprint Qualifying during the first weekend in the 2024 racing calendar, with the Grand Prix itself scheduled to take place on Sunday.
