Storyline

The United Nations' (UN) Human Rights is calling for an independent, transparent investigation into the mass graves found in and around the hospitals in Gaza including the Nasser Hospital in southern part of the enclave.

In a statement on Tuesday, chief Volker Turk strongly condemned recent Israeli strikes in Rafah that resulted in the deaths of many women and children. He also warned against a full-scale incursion into an area with over 1.2 million civilians, saying it would violate international humanitarian and human rights law, likely leading to more atrocities.

"We are horrified also by the destruction of Al Nasser Medical Complex and Al Shifa Medical Complex and the reported discovery of mass graves in and around facilities. And we call for independent, effective, transparent investigations into the deaths," said Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, at a press briefing in Geneva.

"Given the prevailing climate of impunity, this should include international investigators. Hospitals are entitled to very special protection under international humanitarian law. And let's be clear, the intentional killing of civilians, detainees, and others who are hors de combat is a war crime," she continued.

Palestinian rescuers discovered 35 bodies at a mass grave in Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis on Tuesday, bringing the total to more than 310 after two weeks since Israeli troops withdrew from the area, said the Palestinian Civil Defense.

The Palestinian Civil Defense noted that some of the dead were killed during the Israeli army's siege of Nasser Hospital, while other remains were buried at the hospital before the siege was launched.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Tuesday rejected that it buried Palestinian bodies, and said the claims were baseless and unfounded, according to the Times of Israel.

The military said it operated in a "targeted manner," only where it had intelligence that Israeli hostages may have been buried.

No bodies of hostages were eventually located at the hospital, according to the IDF.
