Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with U.S.Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Friday afternoon.

Noting that this year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of China-U.S. diplomatic relations, Xi said that over the past 45 years, the relationship has gone through winds and rains, and it has a number of important inspirations to offer: China and the United States should be partners rather than rivals; help each other succeed rather than hurt each other; seek common ground and reserve differences, rather than engage in vicious competition; and honor words with actions, rather than say one thing but do the opposite.

Xi proposed mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation to be the three overarching principles, which he said are both lessons learned from the past and a guide for the future.

Recalling his phone call with U.S. President Joe Biden three weeks ago, Xi said he discussed with Biden their thoughts on the steady development of China-U.S. relations this year, and pointed out that the two sides should value peace, prioritize stability and uphold credibility.

Xi added that he stressed in the past that the two countries should focus more on overall interests and cooperation, rather than differences.

The world today is undergoing changes of a scale unseen in a century, and how to cope with the changes is a question posed by the world and by the times, Xi said, adding that his answer is to promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind, which has become a banner of China's diplomacy and has been welcomed by many countries around the world.

Pointing out that mankind faces so many common challenges, Xi quoted the old Chinese saying "people in the same boat should make concerted efforts" and said that people around the world should now join hands.

Noting that countries are closely linked with each other in the human society, Xi said countries should build maximum consensus for win-win outcomes for all, which is also the basic starting point for China to view the world and its relations with the United States.

As major countries, China and the United States should set a good example of how major countries are supposed to act, shoulder responsibilities for world peace, create opportunities for the development of all countries, provide global public goods, and contribute to world solidarity, Xi said.

Xi said that during his meeting with Biden in San Francisco, he proposed that the two countries should jointly develop a right perception, manage disagreements effectively, advance mutually beneficial cooperation, shoulder responsibilities as major countries, and promote people-to-people exchanges, which should be the five supporting pillars of China-U.S. relations.

Xi said China is willing to cooperate with the United States, but cooperation should be a two-way street, adding that China is not afraid of competition, but competition should be about common progress, not a zero-sum game.

China is committed to non-alignment, and the United States should not form small cliques, both sides can have their own friends and partners and should refrain from targeting, opposing or damaging each other, Xi said.

China is happy to see a confident, open, prosperous and thriving United States, and hopes the United States can also look at China's development in a positive light, Xi said.

Citing the old Chinese proverb "every day that goes by without progress is a day of decline" to describe China-U.S. relations, Xi said the stabilizing momentum of bilateral ties did not come easily.

Xi expressed the hope that the teams of the two sides will continue to work hard to actively implement the San Francisco vision he reached with Biden, so that China-U.S. relations will truly stabilize, improve and move forward.

Blinken conveyed President Biden's greetings to Xi and said that since the two leaders met in San Francisco, the two sides have made positive progress in bilateral exchanges, drug control, artificial intelligence, people-to-people exchanges, and other areas.

The world today faces many complex challenges that require cooperation between the United States and China, Blinken said, adding that all Americans he met during his China trip also would like to see the bilateral ties improve.

The United States does not seek a new Cold War, its objective is not to change China's system, it does not want to curtail China's development, its alliances are not targeted against China, and the United States does not seek conflict with China, Blinken said.

The United States adheres to the one-China policy and hopes to maintain communication with the Chinese side to earnestly implement the consensus reached between Xi and Biden in San Francisco, seek more cooperation, avoid misconception and miscalculation, manage differences in a responsible manner, and promote the steady development of U.S.-China relations, Blinken added.

Xi asked Blinken to convey his greetings to Biden.
