"For quite some time, out of a hidden agenda, some U.S. officials have made a series of remarks denigrating the authority of UNGA Resolution 2758, trumpeting the notion that Taiwan's status is undetermined, and advocating support for Taiwan's participation in the UN system. Such remarks are a complete distortion of the facts, a falsification of history, a violation of the basic principles of international law and international relations, and a betrayal of the commitments made by the U.S. itself. Taiwan has been part of China since ancient times. This is a historical fact and an international consensus. The 1943 Cairo Declaration and the 1945 Potsdam Proclamation clearly stipulate that Taiwan, a Chinese territory stolen by Japan, shall be restored to China. These documents with international legal effect have formed an integral part of the post-WWII international order and also legally affirmed Taiwan's status as China's inalienable territory. The United States is a signatory to both the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation. The U.S. stated in the three China-U.S. joint communiques that 'The Government of the United States of America acknowledges the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China'. It has been reaffirmed multiple times by the U.S. leaders to not support 'Taiwan independence' 'two Chinas' or 'one China, one Taiwan'. However, in recent years, the U.S. has blatantly questioned and misinterpreted UNGA Resolution 2758. It has been constantly obscuring and hollowing out the one-China principle, wantonly advocating support for Taiwan's participation in the UN system which only sovereign states can participate in, running counter to what it has said. It is turning back the wheel of history."

5. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Wang Wenbin, spokesman, Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
"The era of hegemony dominating international relations is long gone. It is just wishful thinking for any country, including the United States, to challenge UNGA Resolution 2758 and the one-China principle. Before Resolution 2758 was adopted with an overwhelming majority, the United States tried to push through a 'dual representation' to create 'two Chinas' or 'one China, one Taiwan', but failed in the end. Today, if the United States goes against the tide of the times by playing the 'Taiwan card' and containing China with Taiwan, it will only face greater failure."

The U.S. attempt to challenge the one-China principle is just wishful thinking, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday, in commenting on recent remarks made by some U.S. officials concerning the status of Taiwan in distortion of historical facts and in violation of international law.
Wang Wenbin, the spokesman, made the statement at a press conference in Beijing when asked to comment on the recent inappropriate remarks made by Mark Lambert, the U.S. Department of State's China coordinator and deputy assistant secretary in the Bureau of East Asia and Pacific Affairs, and other U.S. officials from the German Marshall Fund.
"For quite some time, out of a hidden agenda, some U.S. officials have made a series of remarks denigrating the authority of UNGA Resolution 2758, trumpeting the notion that Taiwan's status is undetermined, and advocating support for Taiwan's participation in the UN system. Wang pointed out that the U.S. distortion and denigration of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, along with its recent outright assertion that UN Security Council Resolution 2728 demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza is "non-binding", are parallel examples of the United States' selective application of international law and basic principles of international relations, demonstrating its bullying and hegemonic tendencies.
