Beijing has been baking in three consecutive days of exceptionally high temperatures with a high of over 40 degrees Celsius recorded in a suburban area on Tuesday.

Temperatures in urban areas of the Chinese capital had reached 35 degrees Celsius by 14:00 Tuesday, with the city's western Mentougou District seeing the mercury peak at a sizzling 40.3 degrees Celsius.

Forecasters anticipate the intense heat wave will persist until Thursday, while the city's meteorological service on Monday raised the high temperature alert to orange - the second highest level in China's three-tier color-coded warning system for high temperatures.

Residents are advised to minimize their time spent outdoors during the peak temperature periods, while meteorologists warned some regions in Beijing could experience strong convective weather through till Tuesday evening, with the public urged to take precautions against possible thunderstorms and strong winds.
