"It can carry over 1,000 passengers at capacity and has a continuous running range of 1,200 kilometers at a cruising speed of 160 km/h. Compared with the same type of products worldwide, it boasts greater passenger capacity, faster speed, and longer range. First, it is more eco-friendly because it only produces water and no air pollutant emissions whatsoever during operation. With its estimated annual operation of 300,000 kilometers, each train can reduce carbon emissions by 730 tons, equivalent of planting nearly 37.8 hectares of trees. Second, it is applicable in a wider range of operating scenarios, including non-electrified passenger railways at home and aboard."

Storyline

China debuted its first zero-carbon intelligent intercity train at InnoTrans 2024, a leading international trade fair for transport technology held in German capital Berlin on Tuesday.

The groundbreaking train, CINOVA H2, was developed by CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation.

The train is powered by hydrogen, which generates electricity through a chemical reaction with oxygen, producing only water as a byproduct and ensuring zero-carbon emissions throughout operation.

Hydrogen energy, widely considered one of the most promising clean energy sources of the 21st century, is a key focus in the green transformation of railway technology.

The train is equipped with high-power fuel cells capable of producing up to 960 kilowatts, enabling sustained speeds of 160 km/h and a top speed of 200 km/h.

It features a four-car formation and can carry more than 1,000 passengers.

With an estimated annual operation of 300,000 kilometers, each train can cut down carbon dioxide emissions by about 730 tons annually.

The train is highly versatile and can be used on non-electrified railways worldwide, replacing traditional internal combustion engine powered vehicle.
