China's box office revenue for the 2025 Spring Festival holiday has reached 9.51 billion yuan (about 1.31 billion U.S. dollars) as of 9:00 on Wednesday, setting a new record for the period, according to data from the China Film Administration.
Meanwhile, the total box office in the Chinese film market since the beginning of 2025 now ranks first in the world after surpassing North America.
The films that topped the country's box office charts were all Chinese productions, contrasting previous trends.
Leading the pack was animated feature "Ne Zha 2," the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster "Ne Zha." Trailing behind was "Detective Chinatown 1900," a thriller comedy and part of the successful Detective Chinatown franchise. Epic fantasy "Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force" came in third.
The number of moviegoers also soared, with 187 million people attending theaters during the holiday, marking an attendance milestone.
A trip to the cinema has become an increasingly popular activity for families and friends in China during the Spring Festival holiday, contributing to the vibrancy of the country's film market.
"There are more moviegoers than in previous years. Watching movies during the Spring Festival is a part of celebrations," said Mr. Rong, a moviegoer in the southern Chinese metropolis of Guangzhou, Guangdong Province.
Across the city, many cinemas have partnered with nearby restaurants or drink shops to launch movie ticket deals, allowing more businesses to cash in on the booming enthusiasm for movie-going.
"Customers of ours or the hot pot restaurant on the second floor can enjoy discounts with our tickets or their receipts. Customers who eat at the hot pot restaurant can show us their receipts to get a 20-percent discount on movie tickets," said Bu Xinyi, marketing manager for a cinema in Guangzhou.
The Spring Festival, traditionally a peak and lucrative period for moviegoing, saw fierce competition among major releases. This year, the official holiday period was extended by one day, running a total of eight days from January 28 to February 4.
