China strongly opposes U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum products, and urges the United States to promptly cancel the Section 232 tariffs, said a spokeswoman from the Ministry of Commerce at a regular press conference on Thursday.
On February 10, U.S. President Trump issued two proclamations adjusting the tariffs on steel and aluminum products. These changes raised the aluminum tariffs from 10 percent to 25 percent and expanded the coverage of more downstream steel and aluminum products. The new measures are an extension of the Section 232 tariffs originally imposed in 2018, which included 10 percent tariffs on aluminum and 25 percent on steel. The revised tariff policies came into effect on Wednesday.
In response to the expanding tariffs of the United States, He Yongqian, spokeswoman of the Ministry of Commerce, reiterated China's position against the acts of unilateralism and protectionism.
