Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping wrapped up a fruitful two-day state visit to Vietnam on Tuesday, with the two neighboring countries pledging joint efforts to accelerate the building of a community with a shared future that carries strategic significance.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Vietnam, a milestone in the two nations' profound traditional friendship featuring "camaraderie plus brotherhood" -- a famous description of China-Vietnam relations by late Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh (1890-1969).

The latest trip was Xi's fourth visit to Vietnam in a decade and his first overseas tour of the year.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, on Monday afternoon attended a welcome ceremony hosted by To Lam, general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee.

The two leaders had a small-group tea chat to exchange experience on party governance. They agreed to strengthen exchanges and mutual learning between the two countries to jointly advance the socialist path.

In their talks later that afternoon, Xi said China and Vietnam should work to advance their comprehensive strategic cooperation with high quality, ensure steady and sustained progress in building a China-Vietnam community with a shared future, and contribute even more to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

"This is my fourth visit to Vietnam since I became general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and president of the People's Republic of China, and it is also my visit to the home of a neighbor, to the home of comrades, after more than a year," said the Chinese president.

After the talks, Xi and Lam jointly witnessed the signing of 45 bilateral cooperation documents covering connectivity, artificial intelligence, customs inspection and quarantine, agricultural trade, culture and sports, people's livelihood, human resources development, media and other fields.

While meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh the same day, Xi urged efforts of both two countries to intensify high-level exchanges, strengthen strategic communication, and jointly oppose hegemonism, unilateralism and protectionism.

On Monday evening, Xi met with Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam Tran Thanh Man. During the meeting, he urged efforts of both countries to march toward modernization hand in hand, and to inject more stability and positive energy into the world.

The same evening, Xi attended a welcome banquet hosted by Lam and Vietnamese President Luong Cuong.

The next morning, Xi laid a wreath at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Hanoi to pay tribute to the late Vietnamese leader.

As this year is also designated the China-Vietnam Year of People-to-People Exchanges, a series of activities have been organized and planned to further cement public support for bilateral relations.

During his meeting with representatives attending the Chinese and Vietnamese People's Friendship Meeting on Tuesday, Xi said that over the years, the peoples of China and Vietnam have stood together through thick and thin, and have jointly written a glorious chapter in the history of China-Vietnam friendship.

"This year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Vietnam and the China-Vietnam Year of People-to-People Exchanges. Just as an old Chinese saying goes, 'A towering tree has its roots, and a river flowing from the mountains has its source,' the foundation, the lifeblood and the source of strength of China-Vietnam relations lie within the people. Let us continue the traditional friendship and merge the streams of goodwill between the peoples of the two countries into a mighty river of China-Vietnam friendship," Xi said in addressing the event.

After the event, Xi, Lam and Cuong jointly launched the "red study tours" program.

Xi, Lam and Chinh jointly witnessed the launching ceremony of the China-Vietnam railway cooperation mechanism.

Xi and Lam met again Tuesday morning before the Chinese leader concluded his state visit to the southeast Asian country. Although the visit was brief, Xi said, it was rich in activities and fruitful in outcomes.

The two sides reaffirmed their shared political will to advance the global socialist cause, expressed their common aspiration to comprehensively promote bilateral strategic cooperation to achieve their goals, Xi said, adding that he is full of confidence in the development prospects of China-Vietnam relations.

Xi wrapped up his visit to Vietnam on Tuesday afternoon. He was seen off at the airport by Chinh and other Vietnamese party and government leaders at the airport before leaving to visit Malaysia and Cambodia.
