Warmer spring temperatures have begun melting the frozen surface of Ulungur Lake in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, creating a striking patchwork of ice and open water.

The thawing ice breaks into tens of thousands of pieces in an array of stunning shapes that resemble naan breads, one of the most beloved snacks in Xinjiang.

Drifting on the lake, the crystal-clear ice cubes together with the mirror of the sky create an awe-inspiring view and a dream-like landscape.

As one of China's 10 largest freshwater lakes, Ulungur Lake in Fuhai county, Altay Prefecture, encompasses more than 100,000 hectares of wetlands, constituting 86.97 percent of its total area. The lake is a vital rest stop for migratory birds traversing the region.

⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠　中国北西部の新疆ウイグル自治区・福海県にあるウルングル湖でこのほど、気温上昇に伴い湖面の氷が融け始めている。その光景がいかにも、地元の伝統食「ナン」作りの工程に似ていて幻想的な美しさを呈している。

　解氷が進む湖面では、大小様々な形の氷塊が無数に浮遊。遠目には小麦粉を焼いて作る円形の「ナン」が湖面に散らばっているかのような光景が広がり、地元住民から「氷のナン（氷饢）」と親しまれている。水流に揺られ氷塊がぶつかり合いながら形を変える様子は、職人がナンを叩きながら形を整える「打饢」の動作を彷彿させる。

　春の日差しを浴びた湖面は鏡のように青空に浮かぶ雲を映し出し、砕け氷が織りなす幾何学模様が衝撃的な風景を創出。自然の造形美と人間の生活文化が見事に重なった一コマに、訪れた人々は息をのんだ。現地気象当局によると、この季節限定の光景は今後2週間ほど楽しめる見込みだという。

　ナンは、中央アジア発祥の伝統的な円形パン。中国新疆では主食として親しまれている。小麦粉を平らに伸ばし専用のかまどで焼き上げる製法が特徴だ。
