The U.S. consumer confidence index for April has dropped for the fifth straight month due to deteriorating economic expectations, reaching its lowest level since May 2020, according to data released by the Conference Board, a non-profit business membership and research organization, on Tuesday.
Data shows that the U.S. consumer confidence index for April stood at 86, falling below market expectations of 87.5 and March's figure of 93.9. Among the various factors influencing consumer perceptions of the economic landscape, tariffs emerged as the primary concern, with consumers mentioning tariffs at the highest frequency on record for the organization.
The Conference Board said that within the five components of the index, the Present Situation Index -- based on consumers' assessment of current business and labor market conditions -- decreased 0.9 points to 133.5, while the Expectations Index -- based on consumers’ short-term outlook for income, business, and labor market conditions -- dropped 12.5 points to 54.4, the lowest level since October 2011 and well below the threshold of 80 that usually signals a recession ahead.
Meanwhile, the share of consumers expecting fewer jobs in the next six months rose to 32.1 percent, nearing levels seen during the international financial crisis in April 2009. Expectations regarding future income prospects have turned notably negative for the first time in five years, suggesting that concerns about the economy have extended to consumers worrying about their own personal situations.
In addition, due to the high volatility in the U.S. financial markets, 48.5 percent of consumers anticipate a decline in stock prices over the next 12 months, the highest share since October 2011.
