Storyline

The total number of interregional passenger trips across China during the upcoming five-day May Day holiday starting May 1 is estimated to reach 1.42 billion, a year-on-year increase of 4.5 percent, according to the Ministry of Transport.

The May Day holiday is typically one of the busiest travel periods of the year. During the holiday, Chinese travelers hit the road to visit family, explore domestic destinations, or venture abroad.

The China Railway estimated that 18.7 million interregional passenger trips will be handled nationwide on Wednesday, with 1,166 additional trains scheduled to meet the surging demand.

According to the ticket pre-sale situation, the number of cross-border passengers has increased significantly. As of the end of Tuesday, the number of cross-border international passenger trips made on the China-Laos Railway exceeded 500,000.

Due to the intersection of commuter traffic and early holiday travel, it is expected that traffic pressure on the road network will gradually increase from 14:00 Wednesday, with the peak period falling from 18:00 to 20:00.

In terms of air travel, it is estimated that an average of 2.15 million passenger trips will be handled daily nationwide during the holiday period.
