Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Russia, on Thursday and the two heads of state held large-group and small-group talks at the Kremlin.

Xi and Putin had in-depth exchanges of views on China-Russia relations and on major international and regional issues, agreeing to unswervingly deepen strategic coordination and promote the stable, healthy and high-level development of bilateral relations, while jointly upholding the correct historical perspective on World War II, and safeguarding the authority and status of the United Nations, and maintaining international fairness and justice.

China-Russia ties have enjoyed stable, healthy and high-level development in recent years thanks to joint efforts from both sides, Xi said, hailing long-term good-neighborly friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation as distinct features of bilateral ties.

Xi noted that political mutual trust between the two countries has grown deeper, practical cooperation has ever solidified, people-to-people and sub-national exchanges have gained vitality, and bilateral ties in the new era have become more confident, stable and resilient.

History and reality have fully demonstrated that the continuous development and deepening of China-Russia relations is an inherent requirement for renewed friendship between the two peoples for generations to come, Xi said. It is also an inevitable choice for mutual achievement and the promotion of each other's development and rejuvenation, as well as the call of the times for safeguarding international fairness and justice and promoting the reform of the global governance system, he added.

Noting that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War, and the World Anti-Fascist War, the Chinese president praised the tremendous sacrifices made by the two peoples of China and Russia 80 years ago and their historic contribution to safeguarding world peace and advancing the cause of human progress.

He emphasized that in face of unilateralism and bullying today, China will work with Russia to shoulder the special responsibility as major countries in the world and permanent members of the UN Security Council, jointly promote the correct historical perspective on World War II, safeguard the authority and status of the UN, resolutely defend the fruits of victory in World War II, resolutely safeguard the rights and interests of the two countries as well as those of developing countries, so as to join hands to promote an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization.

The two heads of state heard reports from persons in charge of relevant departments of the two governments on the cooperation in various fields.

Xi called on both sides to stay committed to the overall direction of cooperation, eliminate external disruptions, and cement the stable cooperation foundation while generating stronger momentum for progress.

He urged bilateral efforts to leverage the complementarity of the two countries' available resources and industrial systems, and to expand high-quality, mutually beneficial cooperation in economy and trade, energy, agriculture, aerospace, and artificial intelligence.

He further emphasized the need for closer coordination on multilateral platforms such as the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and BRICS, stressing Global South solidarity, and a firm commitment to true multilateralism in guiding global governance in the right direction.

Xi emphasized that China is comprehensively advancing the building of a strong country and the great cause of national rejuvenation through Chinese modernization.

He expressed the country's resolve and confidence in overcoming all kinds of risks and challenges. He also stressed that regardless of any changes in the external environment, China will remain focused on running its own affairs well.

China stands ready to work with Russia to shoulder the special responsibilities of the times, uphold the global multilateral trading system and ensure the stability and smooth flow of industrial and supply chains, so as to contribute more to both countries' development and revitalization, and to international fairness and justice, Xi said.

Putin acclaimed significance of Xi's visit to Russia, saying it is expected to inject strong impetus to Russia-China ties and jointly safeguard victory in World War II.

Putin said that Russia-China ties are built on an equal footing and mutual respect, adding that they are not directed against any third party, nor will it be led astray by any turn of events.

Firmly advancing the development of Russia-China ties and expanding mutually beneficial cooperation is Russia's strategic choice, said Putin.

He stressed Russia's firm adherence to the one-China principle and its consistent support for China's position on the Taiwan question.

Russia is willing to maintain close high-level exchanges with China and strengthen practical cooperation in such sectors as trade, investment, energy, agriculture, and science and technology, deepen people-to-people exchanges in education, culture, youth, and tourism, and enrich cooperation with China in the Russian Far East, Putin said.

The Russian president stressed that imposing high tariffs defies logic and legality, and will ultimately backfire.

Commending the courageous Chinese people for securing a great victory under the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Putin called on the two sides to uphold the authority of the UN and international law, stay committed to the correct historical narrative of World War II, and safeguard international fairness and justice, thus working together to build a better future for both countries and beyond.

The two heads of state urged relevant departments of both countries to strengthen communication and coordination in line with the consensus reached, in order to jointly create an even brighter future for China-Russia relations.

After the talks, the two heads of state signed a joint statement on further deepening the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era.

They also witnessed the exchange of more than 20 bilateral cooperation documents covering areas of global strategic stability, upholding the authority of international law, bio-safety, investment protection, digital economy, quarantine, and film cooperation.

Prior to the talks, Xi attended a welcome ceremony held by Putin.

Xi arrived in Moscow on Wednesday to pay a state visit to Russia and attend the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War, at the invitation of Putin.
