Storyline

Chinese exporters remain optimistic despite uncertainties in global trade, as they accelerate market diversification efforts under policy support, as well as assistance of industry associations and e-commerce platforms in expanding sales channels in the domestic market.

Qiu Rongquan, chairman of the Zhejiang Taida Miniature Electrical Machinery Company, a micro motor and fan manufacturer based in Huzhou City in east China's Zhejiang Province, said his company has not been seriously affected by the trade tensions between China and the United States thanks to its diversified marketing strategy.

"As an SME (small and medium-sized enterprise), we prioritize innovation. Over the years, we have developed many new products and sold them mainly to the Middle East, South America and Southeast Asia," said Qiu Rongquan, chairman of the company.

Jiangsu Zhengdan Chemical Industry Company, a fine and specialty chemicals company in Danyang City of east China's Jiangsu Province, is selling high-end environmentally friendly new materials to Europe.

In the first quarter of the year, Zhengdan Chemical's imports and exports reached 357 million yuan (about 49.41 million U.S. dollars), nearly doubling the value logged in the same period the prior year.

"We are optimistic under the current situation. Besides, under the policy guidance of the customs authorities and thanks to the measures to facilitate clearance, our operational efficiency has been significantly improved," said Cao Pei, deputy sales director of the company

In order to help exporters shift to the domestic market, the Ministry of Commerce launched the "Premium Exports Homebound" activity on April 13.

As of May 2, more than 10 provincial-level regions such as Shanghai, Sichuan and Jiangsu have followed the ministry, with the local activities attended by more than 2,400 foreign trade companies and more than 6,500 buyers, who reached intent to purchase agreements valued over 16.7 billion yuan (about 2.31 billion U.S. dollars) in total.

China's industry associations, major retailers and e-commerce platforms have also made contributions in this regard, establishing channels to put export-clogged inventory on shelves and helping export-focused firms better adapt to the Chinese market.

So far, 15 major e-commerce platforms have contacted more than 26,000 foreign trade companies, and nine platforms have set up special sections for export products, with the total sales exceeding 600 million yuan (about 83 million U.S. dollars).

"Today, we can communicate with more online and offline platforms to broaden sales channels, which gives us strong confidence in development," said Chi Jieling, president of Shenzhen Orange Digital Technology Company.

"We hope that through this matching conference, businesses can build ties and promote premium export products in domestic markets. Of course, our digital platform will play a better role in empowering this shift from foreign trade to domestic sales," said Xiao Rongchen, director of public affairs with the e-commerce giant Meituan.

On April 22, the Ministry of Commerce, together with the National Development and Reform Commission and other relevant departments, rolled out a series of policies to help foreign trade companies expand into the domestic market, focusing on expanding sales channel, domestic consumption, financial and fiscal support, and services.

Various local governments have also offered financial support in key areas to better meet the financing needs of small firms.
