Storyline

As South Korea's June 3 presidential election approaches, candidate registration is underway from Saturday to Sunday, with political parties finalizing their nominees.

On Saturday morning, Lee Jae-myung, the leading contender from the main opposition Democratic Party, officially registered as the party's nominee. Lee has consistently topped the polls and is seen as a strong favorite for the presidency.

Meanwhile, the ruling People Power Party (PPP) continues to face internal turmoil as it struggles to finalize its candidate. After several rounds of primary elections, former labor minister Kim Moon-soo, emerged as the party's presidential candidate.

However, to counter the surging popularity of Lee, PPP leadership has pushed for former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo to run instead.

Han, who was originally an independent candidate, submitted his application to join the PPP on early Saturday, along with documents to register as the party's sole candidate.

Kim refused to step aside, leading the PPP to disqualify him and announce full support for Han. Kim responded by filing a lawsuit, claiming the party's actions were illegal and seeking to reverse the decision.

The PPP is now conducting surveys to assess Han's support rate, with plans to officially register him with the National Election Commission on Sunday. However, a potential court intervention in Kim's favor adds uncertainty to the process.

Following the completion of candidate registration on Sunday, political parties will officially launch their campaigns. Early voting is set for May 29 to 30, with the official presidential vote scheduled for June 3.
