China opposes politicizing education and will firmly protect the legitimate and lawful rights and interests of Chinese students and scholars overseas, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian at a regular press conference in Beijing on Thursday.
On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump suspended for an initial six months the entry into the U.S. of foreign nationals seeking to study or participate in exchange programs at Harvard University.
In response to this development, Lin highlighted the positive outcomes of U.S.-China educational exchanges and warned against backsliding in this regard.
"Education cooperation between China and the United States is mutually beneficial. China consistently opposes politicizing education cooperation. Relevant moves by the United States will undoubtedly hurt its image and its credibility in the world.
