"China is a cradle of civilization in the Eastern world, and Greece is the cradle of civilization in the Western world. So they are two of the most enduring civilizations that really have very much history, philosophy and very great admiration for arts. So they share common values, and these common values are very important for discussing and planning and designing a common future. Because a common future is something that is very needed in our times of challenges."

Storyline

Greek heritage expert Kostas Konstantinidis has stressed the critical role of cross-cultural exchanges between ancient civilizations like China and Greece in addressing contemporary global challenges as the world marks the first International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations on Tuesday.

Last year, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a China-sponsored resolution to designate June 10 as the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.

In an interview with the China Media Group (CMG), Konstantinidis, who serves as managing director and founder of the Greek digital heritage firm PostScriptum, highlighted the unique complementary values the two countries share given their respective histories.

Because a common future is something that is very needed in our times of challenges," he said.

"Greece through its philosophy and inquiry for knowledge has always been searching for new values, for new ideas. On the other side, China with its balance and harmony and love to nature gives us back the necessary tools for discussing about the shared future. So I think these two very valuable civilizations have to have a dialogue, have to give inspiration to one another so that we can continue and build upon it and try to make a sustainable future for the whole world," he continued.

Pointing to the importance of the China-proposed Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), which has been gaining increasing international traction, Konstantinidis praised the initiative's focus on respecting civilizational diversity.

He also stressed the need for countries to maintain dialogue and interactions in order to jointly address the most pressing issues of the day.

"Dialogue is not a luxury, dialogue is a necessity. Together we can build some plan on how to make projects that really help us bring the world a step ahead. The world is full of challenges, full of challenges with conflicts [and] war. So we have to think on our common values, and we have to understand that dialogue only brings people further and makes cultural sustainable environments. So this is something that we have to understand, this is something that we have to pursue. And the respect for diversity is something that we both have in common and we should boost that in all our activities. And this will give the meaning for the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations," he noted.
