China's top political advisor Wang Huning on Sunday called for joint efforts from across the Taiwan Strait to advance national reunification.
Wang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks in a speech at the 17th Straits Forum held in Xiamen City, east China's Fujian Province.
Wang noted that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the recovery of Taiwan -- a shared national memory for people on both sides of the Strait. He stressed that the fruits of that victory must be preserved.
Both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China, he said, emphasizing the importance of upholding the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus.
He called for resolutely opposing any attempt to split Taiwan from China and opposing external interference.
He called on the youths from across the Strait to jointly contribute to the development of the Chinese nation.
In his speech at the event, former chairman of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) party Ma Ying-jeou said the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations is the common expectation of the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, adding that people-to-people exchanges across the Strait cannot be stopped.
He expressed hope that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait will deepen exchanges and cooperation and that people on both sides will strengthen mutual trust and consolidate a shared sense of identity, on the basis of the common political foundation of upholding the 1992 Consensus and opposing Taiwan separatism.
Before the forum, Wang met with the representatives from Taiwan.
On Saturday afternoon, he made a research tour of an industrial park in Xiamen for Taiwan-funded agricultural enterprises.
