Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for upholding the 'China-Central Asia Spirit' which will guide China and the five Central Asian countries in promoting high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and forging ahead toward the goal of building a China-Central Asia community with a shared future.
Xi made the call on Tuesday in a keynote speech at the second China-Central Asia Summit in Kazakhstan's capital of Astana.
The Chinese president concluded a successful three-day trip to Astana on Wednesday after attending the summit, which produced a raft of consensuses across areas ranging from security and trade to regional development.
In his keynote speech, Xi proposed a China-Central Asia Spirit of "mutual respect, mutual trust, mutual benefit and mutual assistance for the joint pursuit of modernization through high-quality development." He said this China-Central Asia Spirit serves as an important guideline for the six countries' endeavor to carry forward friendship and cooperation from generation to generation, and stressed they should always uphold this spirit and let it shine forever.
On the sidelines of the summit, Xi held separate bilateral meetings with the leaders of the five Central Asian countries, including Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, with a focus on the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
While meeting with Kazakh President Tokayev on Monday, Xi said that high-quality Belt and Road cooperation should be used to improve cooperation between China and Kazakhstan.
"China-Kazakhstan relations have withstood the test of a changing international landscape and have constantly grown at a high level. This is attributed to our geographical proximity as neighbors and our historical bond of friendship passed down through generations, as well as the natural choice of our two nations for common development," he said.
Xi had first laid out his vision for building the Silk Road Economic Belt -- a key component of the initiative -- when delivering a landmark speech at the Nazarbayev University in Astana back in 2013.
The summit witnessed more than 50 cooperation documents being signed, including the Astana Declaration which highlights joint efforts in upholding multilateralism, combating terrorism, separatism and extremism and enhancing cooperation in agriculture and energy.
Xi and the leaders of the five Central Asian nations also signed the treaty on eternal good-neighborliness, friendship and cooperation.
According to the treaty, the six countries reaffirmed their firm support for each country's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity as well as the principles of sovereign equality and the inviolability of borders.
Another of the key outcomes of the Astana summit saw the inauguration of three China-Central Asia cooperation centers for poverty reduction, education exchange and desertification control, and the China-Central Asia smooth trade cooperation platform.
China is ready to share its development experience and latest technological advances with Central Asian countries, promote connectivity in digital infrastructure, enhance cooperation on artificial intelligence, and foster new quality productive forces, Xi said at the summit.
It was also decided that China will host the third China-Central Asia Summit in 2027.
The meeting of the heads of state under the China-Central Asia cooperation mechanism was launched in May 2023 with the inaugural summit held in Xi'an, a historic city in northwest China. At that gathering, leaders agreed to convene the summit every two years, alternating between China and Central Asian countries.
The mechanism was further institutionalized last year with the launch of a secretariat in Xi'an.
The second China-Central Asia Summit in Astana marked the first time the gathering was held in a Central Asian country.
