China has called for international efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East to prevent global economy from being impacted.

Commenting on the Iranian Parliament's approval to close the Strait of Hormuz, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told reporters at a routine news brief Monday in Beijing that maintaining stability in the Middle East conforms to the common interests of the international community.

"The Persian Gulf and surrounding waters are vital channels for international trade and energy transport. Maintaining security and stability in the region serves the common interests of the international community. China calls on all parties to intensify efforts to de-escalate tensions and prevent regional instability from further impacting global economic development," said Guo.

The Iranian Supreme National Security Council will make the final decision on the closure of the one of the most important sea passages in the world.
