Storyline

At least 6,175 Palestinians had been killed and 21,378 others injured since Israel renewed its intensive strikes in Gaza on March 18, bringing the total death toll since Oct 7, 2023 to 56,500, and injuries to 133,419, Gaza-based health authorities said on Sunday.

In the past 24 hours alone, Israeli attacks have claimed 88 more Palestinian lives and left 365 others injured, according to the health authorities.

Meanwhile, five Palestinians were killed and dozens injured on Sunday afternoon in an attack by Israeli forces near an aid distribution site in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

Overall, more than 550 Palestinians have been killed while attempting to access aid at distribution sites set up by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a private agency backed by the United States and Israel and operating outside of established UN and traditional humanitarian organizations.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has been mired in controversy since its launch in Gaza on May 27, due to the heavy involvement of Israeli forces and frequent shootings during aid distribution.

Humanitarian groups have accused the organization of deliberately creating obstacles for Gaza civilians, forcing them to choose between starvation and risking their lives to obtain minimal supplies. They have denounced it as "a massacre under the guise of humanitarian aid" that "must be stopped immediately."

Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner general for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), condemned the organization earlier this month, calling it "an abomination" and "a death trap costing more lives than it saves."

Also on Sunday, Israel's domestic security agency Shin Bet announced the arrest of more than 60 Hamas members in the West Bank over the past three months.

Shin Bet said in a statement that the arrests were part of a joint operation with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and police, during which "a significant, complex, and large-scale Hamas infrastructure was exposed" in the West Bank town of Hebron.

Hamas leaders had been recruiting, arming, and training additional operatives from the area to carry out shooting and bombing attacks against Israeli targets, according to the statement.

Shin Bet described the operation as its biggest investigation in the West Bank in the past decade.

Hamas has not yet commented on the statement.

Separately, the IDF reported the death of an Israeli soldier during a clash in northern Gaza on Sunday.

According to figures published on the IDF's official website, the number of Israeli soldiers killed in the conflict with Hamas has risen to 880 since Oct 7, 2023.
