China has made steady progress in advancing water conservancy infrastructure this year, with a total of 408.97 billion yuan (about 57 billion U.S. dollars) invested in water-related construction projects nationwide in the first five months, according to the Ministry of Water Resources.
A number of major national projects have seen rapid advancements this year.
Construction of a main tunnel for the Guxian Water Conservancy Project, a key component of the Yellow River's water and sediment regulation system, is now fully underway, with 1,834 meters of upper-level diversion tunnel already excavated. Supporting infrastructure such as power supply and access roads is also progressing in an orderly manner.
In southern China, 137 billion yuan (about 19 billion U.S. dollars) has been invested in the Guangdong Northern Bay water resource allocation project. A total of 95 kilometers of tunnels have been excavated -- over 30 percent of the planned length -- with 17 out of 23 branch tunnels already connected. In Xinyi, Guangdong's Maoming, workers are racing to complete the project's longest Baishi branch tunnel.
"Through technological innovation, we've achieved a monthly tunneling record of 617 meters. We aim to bore through the Baishi branch tunnel by next month," said Niu Ruiqiang, project manager of Guangdong GDH Yuexi Water Supply Company Limited under the Guangdong Holdings, the builder of the tunnel.
Several major water infrastructure projects have already been completed and entered trial operation this year.
The main structures of the Yellow River lower reaches flood control project and the Yellow River diversion gate reconstruction have been completed, enhancing the region's flood management and water supply capacity.
The Haihe River tidal gate reinforcement project passed final inspection before flood season, significantly improving tidal and drainage standards.
In Zhejiang Province, the Kaishan Reservoir began storing water after passing inspection, accumulating 117 million cubic meters to date and meeting both flood control and safe water storage goals.
Meanwhile, construction has begun on 11 new major projects across China, covering large-scale irrigation systems, river management, and modernization works.
