Storyline

Elon Musk announced on Saturday he will establish a new political party in the United States, just a day after President Donald Trump signed a significant tax-cut and spending bill that Musk has fiercely opposed.

On his social media platform X, Musk revealed the formation of the "America Party," which aims to "give you back your freedom." He stated that the party would seek to challenge the existing two-party system dominated by Republicans and Democrats.

This announcement followed a July 4 post in which Musk asked his followers whether he should create a political party.

Musk wrote, "When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy."

Initially, Musk supported Trump's re-election campaign both publicly on X and through financial contributions. He also held a prominent role in the newly-created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

However, in May, he announced his departure from the department, citing the completion of his "scheduled time" as a special government employee. Trump subsequently praised him as "one of the greatest business leaders and innovators the world has ever produced."

The relationship soured when the Republican Party introduced a significant tax cut and spending bill, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, for a congressional vote. Musk criticized the legislation as a "massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill" and described it as a "disgusting abomination."

He argued that the bill would exacerbate the "already gigantic budget deficit" and burden American citizens with unsustainable debt.

Earlier this week, Trump threatened to cut off the billion-dollar federal subsidies flowing to Musk's companies, even hinting at the possibility of deportation. Though born in South Africa, Musk has held U.S. citizenship since 2002.
