China's gross domestic product (GDP) grew 5.3 percent year on year in the first half of 2025, showcasing the effectiveness of the country's macroeconomic policies as well as the strong resilience and vitality of its economy, said Sheng Laiyun, deputy director of the National Bureau of Statistics, on Tuesday.
Speaking at a press conference in Beijing, Sheng highlighted that Chinese economy maintained stable operations during the first six months of the year.
"In the first half of the year, the national economy withstood pressures and overcame difficulties to make progress -- the economy remained generally stable while achieving steady growth; production and demand increased steadily; employment remained generally stable; residents' incomes rose continuously; new growth drivers were strengthened; high-quality development made new strides; and overall social stability was maintained. Preliminary calculations show that in the first half of the year, the GDP reached 66 trillion yuan (about 9.21 trillion U.S. dollars), up 5.3 percent year on year at constant prices," said Sheng.
By sector, the primary industry grew 3.7 percent year on year, while the secondary and tertiary industries increased by 5.3 percent and 5.5 percent, respectively, he added.
By quarter, GDP rose 5.4 percent year on year in the first quarter and 5.2 percent in the second one, said Shen, adding that GDP grew 1.1 percent quarter on quarter in the second quarter.
"Overall, more proactive and effective macro policies had taken effect in the first half of the year, enabling the economy to sustain a stable and upward development, demonstrating strong resilience and vitality," Sheng said.
