The Palestinian death toll in the Gaza Strip has risen to 60,430, with 148,722 others injured since the conflict between Hamas and Israel erupted on Oct 7, 2023, Gaza's health authorities said in a statement on Saturday.
Over the past 24 hours, Israeli attacks have claimed 98 lives and injured 1,079 others, according to the statement.
Of those casualties, 39 were killed and 849 injured near aid distribution sites, the statement added.
Hospitals in Gaza recorded nine new deaths, including a child, due to famine and malnutrition over the past 24 hours, health officials said on Saturday.
This brings the total number of hunger-related deaths since the Israeli blockade began in March to 169, including 93 children.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) alert, compiled by UN agencies, has confirmed that Gaza is on the brink of famine.
One in three people in Gaza are going days without food, with acute malnutrition now standing at over 16.5 percent in the Strip. Today, more than 320,000 young children are at risk of acute malnutrition, UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Ted Chaiban told a press conference on Friday.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Saturday declared the defeat of a Hamas battalion in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza, saying three of its members had surrendered earlier that day.
The three militants provided detailed information about a local tunnel and a nearby weapons depot to the IDF, which subsequently discovered numerous weapons and equipment, including bulletproof vests, guns, and grenades, at the site, an IDF spokesperson said in a statement.
Hamas has not yet responded to the statement.
