The chief of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) on Saturday accused the U.S.-and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) of contributing to Gaza's humanitarian catastrophe, blaming the alternative aid system for nearly 1,400 starvation-related deaths.
In a social media statement, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini accused the GHF of deliberately undermining UN-coordinated humanitarian efforts while Israel continues blocking UNRWA from delivering aid since March 2.
"The man-made famine in Gaza has been largely shaped by attempts to replace the UN system through the GHF," Lazzarini wrote, describing the alternative aid mechanism as a "so-called system" that is "responsible for the killing of nearly 1,400 starving people."
UN data reveals that at least 1,373 Palestinians have been killed while seeking food since May 27, with 859 deaths occurring near GHF distribution sites and 514 along food convoy routes, most attributed to Israeli military fire.
The GHF, established in late May with Israeli approval, operates just four distribution points across Gaza. Eyewitness accounts describe chaotic scenes where desperate civilians face lethal risks accessing supplies.
Lazzarini's warning comes as fresh violence erupted July 30-31, killing 105 Palestinians and injuring 680 near aid routes. "No time to waste anymore," he urged, demanding immediate, unconditional border openings to prevent further starvation deaths.
