5. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Moaz Kazem, president, Jordanian Beekeepers' Professional Association/apiary owner:
"Recently, we have observed changes in the climate with delayed rainfall, reduced precipitation, and rising temperatures. These factors have adversely affected the agricultural sector as a whole, especially the beekeeping industry."

8. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Moaz Kazem, president, Jordanian Beekeepers' Professional Association/apiary owner:
"There's no doubt that this decline in production will negatively impact the beekeeping industry, especially small-scale operations. Most beekeepers operate medium- to small-sized businesses, and the reduction in yield will lead to decreased income while expense continue to rise."

11. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Nizar Haddad, agricultural expert, United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization:
"Extreme weather events can have a direct impact on the agriculture sector. Sudden or prolonged high temperatures directly shock both husbandry and crop cultivation, especially in water-scarce regions. Water scarcity negatively impacts agriculture, as it becomes impossible to compensate for the deficits caused by rising temperatures."

Persistent high temperature sweeping across the Middle East has severely struck Jordan's agricultural production, leading to decreased yields and exacerbating pest and disease issues.
Moaz Kazem, president of the Jordanian Beekeepers' Professional Association, operates several apiaries and farms. This summer's heatwave across the Middle East has left him concerned about this year's harvest from the bee farms, as July and August are a crucial period for the year's harvest.
"Recently, we have observed changes in the climate with delayed rainfall, reduced precipitation, and rising temperatures. These factors have adversely affected the agricultural sector as a whole, especially the beekeeping industry," said Kazem.
Due to the high temperatures, Kazem's apiary has set up much less beehives so far this year compared to previous years. Additionally, the apiary staff have had to place buckets of water next to the hives for the bees to drink, helping them to cool down.
Kazem said that this year's heatwave has caused significant losses to Jordan's beekeeping industry. In previous years, Jordan used to produce about 800 tons of honey annually, but he expects this year's honey production to decline by approximately 40 percent.
"There's no doubt that this decline in production will negatively impact the beekeeping industry, especially small-scale operations. Most beekeepers operate medium- to small-sized businesses, and the reduction in yield will lead to decreased income while expense continue to rise," he said.
Extreme high temperatures have significantly impacted Jordan's entire agriculture sector, not only the beekeeping industry. Agricultural experts indicate that the Middle East has been experiencing frequent extreme weathers over the past few years. These extreme heat and drought conditions have slowed crop growth, reduced yields, caused moisture loss, dried out soils, and intensified pest and disease issues, posing substantial challenges to agricultural production.
