The concept of "Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets" provides both theoretical foundations and practical pathways for the comprehensive green transition of economic and social development in China, with distinctive contemporary significance.
The concept is one of the core elements of Chinese President Xi Jinping's thought on eco-civilization. It was first made by Xi on Aug 15, 2005, when he visited Yucun, a village in east China's Zhejiang Province, in his capacity as secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Zhejiang Provincial Committee.
Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 2012, President Xi has been committed to taking green and low-carbon development as the fundamental solution to ecological and environmental problems.
China's energy consumption intensity has cumulatively decreased by more than 26 percent since 2012, making it one of the countries with the fastest decline in energy consumption intensity globally.
As China has included ecological conservation in the Five-sphere Integrated Plan since 2012, green development has become an important component of the New Development Philosophy.
The country has improved its management of energy efficiency standards and labels, with the energy efficiency labeling system covering 45 categories of energy-using products across five major energy-consuming sectors.
For common consumers, products labeled with top-level energy efficiency are most favored. With the promoting of trade-in program for home appliances across the country, more and more enterprises are increasing their investment and research and development in green products.
Meanwhile, China's new shipbuilding orders for green power vessels have been steadily increasing their share in the global market, rising from 31.5 percent in 2021 to 78.5 percent in 2024, and some shipbuilding companies have made technological reserves in green fuel areas such as LNG, hydrogen and ammonia, positioning themselves to secure orders promptly.
In Xiongan New Area, all newly built buildings are now green, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 1.4 million tons annually. Today, the proportion of newly built green building areas across China has exceeded 91 percent.
China's 27 key industrial sectors, including petrochemicals and chemical engineering, and steel, are seizing the opportunity of the country's large-scale equipment renewal and transformation to accelerate the update of equipment and processes and achieve transformation towards green development.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China had cultivated 6,430 green factories so far, with output value accounting for more than 25 percent of the total of the manufacturing industry.
Since 2012, energy consumption and carbon emissions per unit of GDP have fallen by over 26 percent and 35 percent, respectively, making China one of the world's fastest improvers in energy efficiency.
China has ranked first in the world in terms of installed capacity of photovoltaic and wind power for 10 consecutive years, and the installed capacity of new energy storage accounts for more than 40 percent of the global total.
