Storyline

Britain's inflation rose to 3.8 percent in July, the highest since January 2024, when it was 4 percent, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said Wednesday.

The rate, up from 3.6 percent in June, was driven mainly by higher air fares, food and non-alcoholic beverages, and increased costs for hotels and restaurants.

On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 percent in July, compared with a 0.2 percent fall a year earlier.

Earlier this month, the Bank of England (BoE) announced a cut to its benchmark interest rate from 4.25 percent to 4 percent, the lowest level in more than two years, to boost the weakening British economy.

This move marked the BoE's third rate cut this year, and the fifth cut since August 2024, down from a recent peak of 5.25 percent.

The bank said in a statement that underlying UK GDP growth has continued to be subdued, adding downside domestic and geopolitical risks around economic activity remain.
