Xizang has entered a historic stage of best development and greatest changes in which all ethnic groups have gained the most benefits, said China's top political advisor Wang Huning on Thursday when addressing a grand ceremony in Lhasa, capital of Xizang Autonomous Region, to celebrate the region's 60th founding anniversary.

The event was held in front of the Potala Palace, with Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, among the attendees.

Wang, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and head of the central delegation, conveyed congratulations from the Party and central authorities on the 60th founding anniversary of the region.

Wang elaborated on the progress that Xizang has made in development over the past 60 years, saying that the GDP of the region reached 276.5 billion yuan in 2024 from 327 million yuan in 1965.

He said that the per capita disposable income of urban and rural residents in Xizang increased from 456 yuan and 108 yuan in 1965 to 55,444 yuan and 21,578 yuan in 2024, with average annual growth rates of 8.5 percent and 9.4 percent respectively, adding that the average life expectancy has more than doubled compared with the early days when the region was founded.

The region has also made remarkable achievements in the development of education, health, social security, culture and ecology, according to Wang.

Wang highlight efforts to fulfill the four main tasks of ensuring stability, facilitating development, protecting the eco-environment, and strengthening the borders, and build a modern socialist new Xizang that is united, prosperous, civilized, harmonious and beautiful.

He stressed the need to firmly uphold and strengthen the Party's overall leadership, ensure national security and long-term stability, consolidate and develop ethnic unity, advance the high-quality economic and social development, and enhance people's well-being and promote common prosperity in Xizang.

Xizang Autonomous Region was founded on Sept 1, 1965, after the establishment of the regional People's Congress, the local legislature, through elections.
