Storyline

A colorful array of floats on Thursday morning marched past the Potala Palace in Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, as the final part of a grand parade celebrating the plateau region's 60th founding anniversary.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, and other senior officials joined around 20,000 local officials and people from all ethnic groups and all walks of life in the celebration.

The float parade showcased the culture and history of seven major cities and regions in Xizang, namely, Lhasa, Xigaze, Shannan, Nyingchi, Qamdo, Nagqu and Ngari.

The Qamdo float featured elements showcasing the regional city's revolutionary past and Xizang's outstanding role in China's eco-environmental protection.

Inside a village of Qamdo in 1950, the national flag of the People's Republic of China was arisen for the first time in Xizang, paving the way to the peaceful liberation of the whole region in the following year.

Today, Qamdo, surrounded by mountains, rivers and forests, stands as a shining example of Xizang's environmental conservation efforts.

Today, Xizang is one of the regions with the best ecological environment in the world, with the proportion of its days with good air quality now reaching 99.7 percent, and the quality of water in all of its rivers and lakes standing at or above Grade III in the country's five-tier water quality system.

Following the float were marching dancers performing a traditional dance called "Xianzi". A constant feature in local festivals, weddings, and other gatherings, Xianzi is usually performed with song and instrumental music.

The Nagqu float took the shape of the yak, a totem of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau in western China, and the symbol of animal husbandry and northern Xizang culture.

Nagqu, meaning "black river" in the Tibetan language, is the highest city in China. Wearing colorful local traditional attires which are listed as national intangible cultural heritage, performers following the float held yak horns and performed "Guozhuang", a circle dance and one of the three major Tibetan dances, to show a pattern of auspiciousness and the locals' boldness and hospitality.

The Ngari float featured elements of the area's magnificent landscape, as well as Ngari's petroglyphs and Han Dynasty silk patterns. Female dancers performed a dance called "Xuan" which originated from Ngari's Burang County, while male performers played the Xuan drum, a constant feature in major celebrations in Ngari.

Following the regional floats was a float themed "forging ahead", featuring elements including huabiao, a giant flower basket, Chinese knots, doves of peace and Chinese drum to showcase the prosperity of the Chinese civilization. They also convey the best wishes of the Tibetan people in building a brighter future.

Performers coming from all ethnic groups in China danced and cheered as the float marched past. The parade ended with doves and colorful balloons released to the sky.

Prior to the parade, a grand gathering was held at the Potala Palace square in celebration of the autonomous region's founding anniversary.
