Storyline

A book exhibition was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City from Wednesday to Thursday, showing China's role in World War II and its commitment to multilateralism.

The exhibition, titled "China and the Founding and Development of the United Nations: An Exhibition of Books and Literature," was jointly put up by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) Library and the UN's Dag Hammarskjöld Library.

As this year marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, the exhibition of some 400 books highlighted what organizers call "the history of the main theater in the East" during the war, as well as China's commitment to multilateralism.

China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Fu Cong spoke at the exhibition on Wednesday about what the Chinese people went through during the Anti-Fascist War.

"Eighty years ago, the Chinese people had an immense sacrifice of over 35 million casualties, made a decisive contribution to the global victory over fascism," said Fu.

The exhibition also highlighted the role of China, as a founding member of the United Nations, in practicing true multilateralism.

"China is also a very firm supporter of multilateralism, we have a solid and strong relationship with the United Nations, so we hope you can find the development of our relations, and China [is] strong to multilateralism," said Yue Yunxia, a professor from the CASS.

The books on display included a new volume of "The Governance of China," as well as "A New History of World War II," which were donated to the UN library at the exhibition's conclusion.

Thanos Giannakopoulos, principal librarian of the Dag Hammarskjöld Library, welcomed the donation of the books.

"Libraries are actually spaces, safe spaces, for connections, for building bridges, for understanding cultures, and for international collaboration and especially the library of the United Nations should be one of those," said Giannakopoulos.
